Producer Info

At the heart of Sardinia near the mountain village of Mamoiada, 80 kms from the sea, lies the diminutive 2.5ha estate belonging to local boy Giovanni Montisci and family. Giovanni is a mechanic & butcher by trade, turning his hand to the vine on marrying Franzisca during the 1990s. It was only in 2004 that Giovanni started bottling, with production now at approximately 6000 bottles/anno.

‘Barrosu’ means ‘standing out’ in dialect Mamoiada is home to the Montisci family and to the Cannonau (Grenache/Garnaccia) vine, that thrives unaided and unirrigated on the red clay and granitic soils, giving sensual, perfumed wines. Vinification is traditional, by hand, in open fermenters followed by ageing in large slavonian oak botte and used French tonneaux (500litre).

Two Cannonau di Sardegna wines are produced; ‘Riserva’ from 50 year old vines and ‘Riserva Franzisca’ from 80 plus year old vines. These are wonderfully pure, rich and authentic wines, that wear their prodigious alcohol lightly.

Tasting Notes

2016 ‘Barrosu’, Cannonau Vino Rosato lovely orange/deep onion skin in colour. Textured, with some grip and structure, crisp, and perfect to cut through oily fish or charcuterie – even better with Giovanni’s own pancetta or lardo!

2016 ‘Barrosu’ Cannonau di Sardegna, Mamoiada – 15%, c. 5k bts, predominantly from the Elisi zone close to the Mamoiada village, where’s there more clay than pink granite, on grafted vines, 2016 was a fresh year, yet July & August weer both fine, cool September though, quantita & qualita, 28 Sept harvest, notes of brambles, graphite, hedgerow, joyful, violets, pepper, violet cream fragrance

2105 Moscato Bianco Secco  – very pretty and perfumed, with notes of elderflower and grape essence. Sweet and fresh, with good acidity.

2015 ‘Barrosu’ Cannonau di Sardegna, Mamoiada – 15%+, bottled Nov’16, vintage 2015 was hotter than 2016, shaped by a week of 40degrees between sept 10 – 20th (!), hence a surmaturity, sweet strawberry character, aged in botte grande e tonneaux, full, datey/figs, poise, sumptuous, juicy, small red fruit, still very agile & alive..

2016 ‘Franzisca’ Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Mamoiada – 15.5%, from ancient free standing alberello on pink granite, intense purple, compact, black pepper, kirsch bramble, a block, yet so fine with brambles; explosive acidity, suave, the finest of fruit tannins, aged in 20HL botte, violet fragrance, juicy, sumptuous…

2015 ‘Franzisca’ Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Mamoiada – 15%+, spirity, decadent, more prune, fig, emphatic, great sense of (protective) thick skins

2014 ‘Franzisca’ Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Mamoiada – 15%+, earthier, recalls (Barolo 2004 di Monforte!), brooding fruit, square, emphatic, brambly balsamic, autumnal leaves, tamarindo secco, fantastico!

2012 ‘Franzisca’ Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Mamoiada –  perfectly balanced, swathes of rich and ripe fruit, dark cherry and liquorice, hint of herbal, silky tannins, persistent.
