Laiolo Reginin is a producer of principally Barbera d’Asti wines located in the Asti village of Vinchio in Piedmont; at circa 350 metres above sea level in the heart of the Barbera wine zone. Instead of servicing the local market, as the locals prefer to do, current generation Paolo & Anna set their sights on greater things, supplying Lauda Air for several years!
They tend 7 hectares of vines that lie on a fine tilth of yellow sand, tufo (limestone sand) and heavier red clay & sand; they also bought 3 hectares of woodland to offset their carbon footprint, which serves as a source of the prized tartufo bianco! Paolo & Annalisa’s philosophy is one of minimal impact on the environment.

2017 ‘La Quotidiana’ Vino Rosso, Agliano Terme – tasted Feb’18 from tank, c. 10k bts to bottled end March’18; 13% abv, from (Anna’s!) vines, 100% Barbera, in the cool clay rich soils of Agliano Terme; deep dark plum purple; fragrant, violet scented, sumptuous, juicy, suave, delicious, just needs bottling!
2016 ‘La Quotidiana’ Vino Rosso, Agliano Terme – 13% from Anna’s village of Agliano Terme where the Barbera vines were hit by hail in June ’16, leading to more selection required in the vyd & a naturally lower yield; bright, juicy, red cherry stone, alive, lovely purezza & simplicity too, well balanced & drinkable…hence a wine for everyday: La Quotidiana!
2016 ‘La Mora’ Barbera d’Asti, Noche – tasted from tank just before bottling (8k bts); 13.5%, from red sand soils in (Paolo’s) village of Noche, close to the cantina. More violet than purple, the fruit is decidedly more blueberry, sotto spirit, softer, riper; juicy, elegant Amarena cherry on the palate points to the warmer sandy soils & fine tilth.
2015 ‘La Mora’ Barbera d’Asti, Noche – c. 10k bts, from the predominantly red sand vyd across form the cantina, 40 days wild ferment in stainless-steel, delivers a sumptuous, complete, notable gear change up, really juicy plum/brambly (‘Mora‘) skin fruit balanced by sapid minerality. Textbok +++!
2015 ‘Da Sul’ Barbera d’Asti, Noche – c. 8k bts, from 60/65 yo vines grown on the white loess sandy soils behind the cantina, riper red fruit fruit, raspberry ripple like, racy, richer, sapid, focus, intense, will develop nicely in bottle.
2015 ‘L’Intruso’ Grignolino d’Asti, Noche– c.3.5k bts, 15 days s/steel ferment, pale red, licorice root, sapid, true, lifted ribes, original, raspberry essence, exciting (Verduno) Pelaverga esque?! L’Intruso…you need to see the label!
2014 ‘Sotfii’ Freisa d’Asti, Noche – c. 2k bts, bottled March ’16, 15 days on skin in stainless-steel, Barolo esque with its quinine spicy notes, & two big seeds, darker more rustic Nebbiolo like profile, real presence though. (‘Sotfii’ – dialect, in honour of a lady in the village who had 7 children/Sot-fii!)
2016 ‘Chi Ca Vota’ Cortese dell’Alto Monferrato, Noche – c 2.5k, 11.5%, very pretty, alive, white stone, crunchy, elderflower, joyful, Gavi-esque but finer! ‘Chi Ca Vota – dialect: ‘every once & awhile’, Paolo & Anna like to drink a white rather than solely reds!
