Luca Marenco

For generations the Luca Marenco family has been located in the Novello borgata of Bergera-Pezzole at 420m asl, overlooking Monviso.

Son Luca was born in 1990 & is married to Francesca Gallina whose family run a wine laboratory near Alba; they have a young daughter Margherita. Francesca joined Luca at the cantina in 2020. Key members of the team are also Luca’s papa Giancarlo & madre Emma.

The family own circa 11ha:

4ha in MGA Bergera-Pezzole (Arenaria di Diano soils)

1.5ha MGA La Volta di Barolo (Marne Sant’Agata Fossili)

2ha MGA Ciocchini (calcareous marne/clay)

2ha MGA San Ponzio (adjacent to Bergera-Pezzole with more sand)

1ha of 1930-planted Dolcetto da Dogliani vines in Farigliano (marne, silt, & sabbia)

0.5ha Moscato in Castiglione Tinella belonging to Francesca’s family

+ a parcel of Nascetta in Novello’s Tarditi vyd.

Post scuola agraria in Grinzane Cavour, Luca spent a formative 2010-15 working at Borgogno F.lli Serio e Battista where Marco Bolla encouraged him to start bottling his own fruit; this he did in 2015, albeit in a nearby cantina before taking the plunge in 2018, building a new spacious cantina above the Bergera-Pezzole plot, vinifying the Langhe Nascetta del comune di Novello & Barolo MGA La Volta there for the first time (in 2018). Between 2019 & 2022 they invested in three botti grandi of 25 – 50HL. In 2020 they released the debut vintage of Barolo MGA Bergera-Pezzole, Novello.

All the fruity wines are vinified in s/s, while the Barolos are aged in Pauscha botti di 25, 34, & 50HL; Barolo La Volta is only aged in one 34HL Stockinger since vintage 2019. They incorporate some 30% tonneaux/barriques in the ageing of the Barolo classico, which is a blend of Nebbiolo from circa 50% Ciocchini vyd, 40% San Ponzio, 10% Bergera-Pezzole. The Dogliani DOCG comes from a prized 1930 plot of old Dolcetto vines overlooking Farigliano & is vinified in anfora.

The fine, unmacerated, Langhe Nascetta del comune di Novello is a blend of fruit from three vineyards: Tarditi & Ciocchini from Novello plus (uniquely) La Volta di Barolo.

In vintage 2026 they will produce their first Langhe Rosato from Nebbiolo da Barolo fruit.

No herbicides are used, but the cantina is not organic; they used partial S facing nets since 2016. They use Normacorc closures throughout.
