Young Matteo Boasso didn’t go to Alba wine school, electing to study commerce at Uni instead while helping his Dad Beppe sell coffee vending machines; his madre Simonetta Giacosa teaches yoga.
His first taste of winemaking was at the large San Silvestro cantina in the Langhe, where he enjoyed the work but the enologo kindly suggested that Matteo should aim higher. In 2022 he managed to get a job at the F. Principiano cantina in Monforte d’Alba where Ferdinando has inspired & encouraged him to take the next step.
So in his part time Matteo has been making wine – Vino Rosso – from the family’s 1ha plot of Nebbiolo & Barbera in the Localita’ Roccabella of Roddi, while also drawing fruit from a prime 0.6ha plot of Nebbiolo da Barbaresco Montestefano vineyard owned by his mother’s family, Rivella. There’s a small plot of (Langhe) Arneis yet to be vinified too. So a totale of circa 2ha, circa 1000bts/annum.
In his tiny cantina at home in Roddi, Matteo likes to make wine spontaneously for him & his mates who’ve encouraged him on; vinifying the fruit with up to 100% whole bunch, depending on the vintage/quality of the materia prima, using sulphur up to 50mg totale to protect the wine, ageing the wines briefly in barriques & tonneaux. Meanwhile they’ve just painted a newly converted space next-door as a cantina. Matteo hand-designs & paints his labels too.
He currently produces three wines: Vino Rosso Barbera & Vino Rosso Nebbiolo from the family’s vines in Localita’ Roccabella in the comune of Roddi, plus a Vino Rosso ‘Origini’ that blends Nebbiolo fruit from Roccabella & from Montestefano Barbaresco.
In vintage 2026 was born Azienda Agricola Matteo Boasso!
From vintage 2027 Matteo plans to release his debutto Barbaresco Montestefano.
